Small steps add up when it comes to saving the planet

16 November, 2007

World of Wines, based in Sussex, has introduced an incentive scheme for customers who re use

plastic bags.

Since the beginning of this month, every customer who has re used a World of Wines plastic bag

has been handed 10p by the retailer

to help protect the environment.

"We wanted to do something positive in our own small way to help the environment. I don't want my children wading through landfill sites just to get around our countryside, so we came up with this idea," said owner Clive Roberts.

Roberts, who owns stores in Storrington, Steyning and Henfield, said he had looked into introducing recyclable paper bags with handles, but they were three times the price of the 9p plastic bags he currently uses.

He said plastic bags could be re-used safely up to five times if no more than three bottles were carried in them and therefore the move would hopefully cut the number of bags he buys in and subsequently those going into landfill.

"I know it's not much in the grand scheme of things but we also wanted to show that if businesses think creatively about how they work, how they manage both large and small things, we can all have a positive effect - no matter how small, they all add up," he said.
