Cider gets the hots for real innovation

16 November, 2007

Tesco has extended its cider range with a ready-made mulled variety.

Made for the supermarket by Suffolk cyder producer Aspall, Tesco Mulled Cider is flavoured with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, orange and lemon and has an abv of 4.7 per cent. It is being sold in 75cl bottles at £2.99.

Ian Targett, buying manager for cider, said the launch was part of the retailer's efforts to "drive innovation" within the cider industry.

"We have worked hard this year to offer our customers new and interesting products, and in conjunction with Aspall we have created a top quality mulled cider in a convenient format," he said.

Earlier this year Tesco launched an own-label over-ice cider, Oakleys, and a low-alcohol own-label cider.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
