Plans revealed for industry-wide recycling logo

A proposal to introduce a universal recycling label for packaging is being put forward by the British Retail Consortium and the Waste & Resources Action Programme.

The government, local authorities, manufacturers and retailers are being given until Dec 14 to give their views on introducing a single logo designed to simplify the recycling system for consumers and encourage more recycling.

The logo, if approved, would appear on all packaging including glass, aluminum and plastic and would indicate three levels of recyclability - widely recycled, check locally and not currently recycled.

A spokesman for the BRC said: "The ideal is to get most, if not all, manufacturers and retailers involved. There are enough committed to it at this stage to make it happen."

Currently eight retailers, including Asda, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury's, the Co-op and Waitrose, have given their backing to the logo.

If approved the logo could be rolled out by early next year.
