Wine gadgets with a twist
Published:  30 November, 2007

The Waiter's Friend Company is offering retailers a selection of gifts to sell in the run-up to Christmas.

Covering everything from "stocking fillers to clever problem present solvers", the gifts are designed to help ease the dilemma of choosing presents,

according to sales director Paul Fenner.

The line-up includes packs of DropStop discs for drip-free pouring featuring four festive designs by contemporary artist Jackie Knight, a satin-lined gift set containing a cork lifter, Champagne sealer and a chrome drip collar, and the Wine Cellar Log Book where wine lovers can catalogue their collection.

Also in the gift selection is The Master Decanter that has a 1.65-litre capacity, the eco-friendly Sac au Vin six-bottle holder made from waterproof hessian, and a silver-plated Sphera Wine Aerator, which accelerates aeration and reduces sulphur dioxide.

"Wine is very fashionable at the moment - there's a thirst for knowledge and it's very aspirational," Fenner added. "Wine buyers aspire to the tools they see professionals using. Why should shoppers go to a department store to buy gifts when they can get something directly from the same place they buy their wine?"

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
