Makro unveils improvement plans for wine

Wholesaler Makro is to employ wine experts at 11 of its stores to help retailers make the right choices for their customers.

Advisors trained by the cash and carry operator's wine buyer Fabrizio Di Pietro have already started in Manchester, Rayleigh, Chester, Glasgow, Charlton, Leeds and Birmingham, and there are plans to employ four more in other stores over the next 12 months.

The introduction of wine advisors is part of the wholesaler's plans to provide a more specialist service for customers.

A refurbishment programme has also begun in stores in Charlton, Rayleigh, Birmingham and Glasgow before being rolled out to the group's other 29 stores.

Improvements will include clearer signage, a "shop within a shop" layout and a revamped website.

Makro managing director Hannes Floto said: "The plans follow a period of extensive market research among our existing customers to find out what they wanted from their visit to Makro.

"The majority are independent businesses who demand a buying experience which is convenient, fast and efficient with an emphasis on quality and service."

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
