New Year gong for Edrington's boss

Edrington Group chairman Ian Good has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen's New Year's Honours list.

Good, who joined the company in 1969 and the board in 1979, was honoured for his services to industry in Scotland.

The Edrington Group, whose brands include The Macallan and Famous Grouse, is said to be one of Scotland's biggest private manufacturing companies which exports

to 120 countries.

Good became chairman of the company in 1994, two years after he was awarded a CBE for services to Scotch whisky. He also served as chairman of the Scotch Whisky Association from 2001 -05.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
