If you're strapped for cash after a big splurge at Christmas but want to give your shop a bit of a renovation, check out freecycle.org/groups/unitedkingdom . It's a site I stumbled across on

Day when I was looking for some cheap bookshelves to display my ever-increasing wine range. Freecycle is an e-mail list where people give away things that they no longer need . It's about reus ing and keeping good stuff out of landfills. I've managed to lay my hands on masses of great stuff like fold-away tasting tables, a comfy sofa for my customers, some retro Champagne flutes and a wine rack. It also means I can give the shop a spring

clean and give all my clutter to a good home.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
