Upward trend

Fine wine prices slumped slightly after a huge peak in early summer 2007, but showed signs of rallying again towards the end of the year, according to the Liv-ex 100 Index, the fine wine benchmark index. The index's value at the end of December 2007 was 239.84, up 0.8 per cent from the month before. The

index is up 40.1 per cent from the year before.

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
