Only the Finest for Tesco's ale and cider

25 January, 2008

Tesco has launched a range of premium ales and ciders under its Finest own-label.

The three ales in the line-up include a 5 per cent abv bottle-conditioned ale produced by O'Hanlons Brewery in Devon (£1.79), a 4.7 per cent abv golden ale from the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, Yorkshire (£1.69), and a 5 per cent abv IPA from the Williams Bros Brewing Company of Alloa (£1.59).

The retailer is also cashing in on the cider boom by rolling out four ciders in 50cl bottles. Three come from Herefordshire producer Westons - an oak-conditioned cider (6.6 per cent abv, £1.69), a cloudy cider (7.3 per cent, £1.79) and an organic cider (6.5 per cent, £1.69). The final cider in the line-up is a 7.4 per cent single varietal cider from Thatchers (£1.49).

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
