Yapp matches food and wine online
Published:  24 January, 2008

Wiltshire-based wine merchant Yapp Brothers is making it easy for customers to ensure they drink the most suitable wines with their meals - by launching a web-based food and wine matching facility.

Since Jan 17, visitors to the site - yapp.co.uk - have been able to search for wines to accompany a variety of dishes using options such as style, region and price.

Jackie Dyer, HR and communications manager at Yapp Brothers, said she came up with the idea for the service last year, when food and wine tastings run by the merchant became more popular.

She said: "We get a lot of requests for recommendations . People are perhaps drinking wine more with food than on its own, and they want to know what will go together. We are certainly seeing more

people showing an interest."

All recommendations are made by members of the Yapp team, who have tried and tested each wine alongside different foods. Dyer said: "We are fairly broad in the

matching, and it will of course depend on what sauce you might have with your beef, for example; but we are all trying things ourselves , so we have a good idea of what goes with what."

Faith in fakes

One of the most fascinating stories in wine, fit to stand alongside the Judgement of Paris, is that of Rudy Kurniawan, a man who managed to fool friends, auction houses and experts into believing they were drinking some of the world’s most expensive wines.
