New "pink port" hits shelves at M&S
Marks & Spencer is claiming to have introduced the first new port style to the UK since 1970 with the launch of Pink Port.
Designed to attract more female drinkers to the port category, M&S Pink Port is made from classic red port grapes but is lighter in style than other ports due to colour extraction, cold settling and cool fermentation during vinification.
The style is described as light with a palate of "ripe berry and fruit flavours" and a crisp dry finish and is designed to be drunk chilled or over ice.
It is believed to be the first time a new port style has been launched in the UK since the Late Bottle Vintage in 1970.
M&S said it hoped to attract a "far more varied consumer demographic" and help boost port consumption outside the festive season with the new port, which goes on sale today in stores for £7.99.
