New MD for Magners

30 January, 2008

Magners owner C&C Group is hoping to drive cider sales in the UK with the appointment of Coors boss John Holberry.

Holberry, who has been managing director of Coors sales operations since 2001, will start as Magners UK managing director on March 18.

C&C chief executive Maurice Pratt said: "His considerable experience in the drinks industry in Great Britain will spearhead the growth and further development of our Magners cider business in that market.

"The appointment is a significant step in implementing the re-organisation plan announced on 15 November 2007."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
