Spar discovers new wines

01 February, 2008

Spar has re-launched its Discoveries wine range to include six new wines from across the globe.

The updated own-label range includes a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, an Australian Shiraz, a Chardonnay and Merlot from South Africa, and a French Grenache and Cabernet Rosé.

All 53 wines in the existing range have also been given a re-design to ensure a consistent look.

Spar wine trading controller Liz Aked said the wines had been chosen to reflect the fact that more consumers were choosing wine by style rather than country.

She said: “My wine buying team and I have worked to create a range incorporating the consumer’s ever changing desire for contemporary wines, and we believe that the Discoveries range has achieved great quality wine at the right price.”

The new range will appear in stores in March. All wines have an rrp of £4.99.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
