Tesco triumphs at Drinks Retailing Awards

Tesco was a clear winner at last night's Drinks Retailing Awards, picking up five of the 17 awards.

The supermarket chain was voted best multiple wine retailer, best supermarket and online/direct sales retailer of the year at the ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel.

Judges also gave the best customer magazine/website of the year award to the chain for its Wine Club magazine and website and awarded staff in the beers wines and spirits division the drinks buying team of the year title.

Tesco head of BWS Dan Jago praised his 25-strong team for their “incredible hard work”. He said: “To win one or two awards would have been fantastic but to have five across such a broad area is amazing.

"It does go to show helping customers understand the proposition better pays off. We’re facing a much tougher environment in terms of customer spend and you’ve got to offer customers great value and there’s an opportunity to encourage them to understand what value means.”

Co-op's wine development manager, Paul Bastard received a standing ovation after being given the lifetime achievement award.

Bastard, who joined the Co-op in 1989 as beer, wine and spirits buyer was recognised for his work at the Co-op and his contribution to the wine trade.

The awards, now in their seventh year, aim to recognise and commend excellence in drinks retailing and are open to everyone, from small independents to the major multiples.

Innovation of the year: Barrels & Bottles' School of Food, Wine & Dining

Best customer magazine/website of the year: Tesco Wine Club magazine & website

Online/direct sales retailer of the year: Tesco

Drinks wholesaler of the year: Booker

Drinks buying team of the year: Tesco

Award for sales excellence: Chris Riley, retail manager, Rodney Densem Wines

Independent beer retailer of the year: Scatchards of Chester

Multiple beer retailer of the year: Waitrose

Independent spirits retailer of the year: Gordon & MacPhail

Multiple spirits retailer of the year: Booths

Independent wine retailer of the year: Cellar Door Wines

Multiple wine retailer of the year: Tesco

Convenience store of the year: Bargain Booze Select Convenience, Oswaldtwistle

Community off-licence of the year: Rock Bottom

Supermarket of the year: Tesco

High street chain of the year: Majestic

Lifetime achievement award: Paul Bastard

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
