Supermarket giant scoops five awards in the annual OLN search for the best in the drinks industry

Tesco swept the board at this week's OLN Drinks Retailing Awards, winning five of the 17 gongs, including Supermarket of the Year.

The grocery giant also scooped awards for Online/Direct Sales Retailer of the Year, Best Customer Magazine/Website of the Year, Drinks Buying Team of the Year and Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year.

Last year Tesco undertook a massive category overhaul, bringing more than 370 new wines into its range.

Head of BWS Dan Jago said he was "over the moon" with the accolades and praised his 25-strong team for their "incredible hard work".

He said: "We're absolutely delighted. To win one or two would have been fantastic but to have five across such a broad area is amazing.

"It does go to show that helping customers understand the proposition better pays off. We're facing a much tougher environment in terms of customer spend . You've got to offer customers great value and there's an opportunity to encourage them to understand what value means."

Tesco's victor ies w ere one of the chief talking points of the night, which also saw Majestic pick up High Street Chain of the Year and Waitrose named Multiple Beer Retailer of the Year.

Cellar Door Wines in St Albans, which won Independent Wine Retailer of the Year, was one of the many independents crowned the best of the best in drinks retailing.

The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the Co-op's wine development manager Paul Bastard, who received a standing ovation from the audience.

OLN judges praised Bastard for his championing of Fairtrade and organic wines and said his love of wine, widespread expertise and enthusiasm has won him a reputation as an "all-round great guy" among his colleagues, suppliers and across the trade.

Bastard said: "To be given the Lifetime Achievement Award is very kind, but really it's for all of the team at the Co-op." He described his job as "highly rewarding" and said one of the most satisfying things was seeing co-workers rise up through the ranks and pass WSET exams as a result of their enthusiasm for wine retailing.

"I've got a lot to thank the Co-op for . I've always been given a free rein and the freedom to develop our ranges," he added. More pictures and reports from the Drinks Retailing Awards will appear in the Feb 22 edition of OLN.
