Incentive for sustainability

New Zealand Winegrowers has launched an initiative to give wineries and vineyards the ability to calculate their carbon footprint and to encourage sustainable winegrowing. The downloadable protocol and calculation tool is available on the New Zealand Winegrowers website at nzwine.com. It has been developed through a partnership between key international wine industry organisations in Australia, California, South Africa and New Zealand.

Handbag-in-box

Tesco is stocking a limited edition Gallo Family Vineyards White Grenache wine box in the shape of a handbag. Hailed as "this season's hottest accessory", it contains 1.5 litres of wine - the equivalent of two bottles. Available in 213 Tesco stores nationwide during February and March, the wine box is described by Gallo as "perfect for girlie gatherings, parties and family lunches". It

retails at £9.49.

Gearing up for St Patrick

Diageo is spending £3 million on helping drinks shops maximise St Patrick's Day sales. Independent retailers can get their hands on in-store POS advertising Guinness and offering customers the chance to win a VIP weekend in Dublin, including a private brewery tour with the Guinness master brewer. Flags, hats, bunting, balloons and inflatable cans will also be available.

The limitations of Instawines

Picture the scene. You put your key in the keyhole, shove the door with your shoulder, drop your bags and look down. There, beaming up at you, is some relative or friend’s smug postcard with sandy beaches, Piña Coladas and palm trees (or, these days, an in nity pool and a detox smoothie) with a literal or metaphorical “wish you were here” written large.
