What proportion of families' spending goes on alcohol?

British families spend the same proportion of their household budget on alcohol as they did 50 years ago, according to a survey by the Office of National Statistics.

On average, UK households spend around £11 a week out of a budget of £456 on alcoholic drinks and tobacco. Alcohol makes up 3 per cent of the weekly family budget, while tobacco takes up just 1 per cent - a significant drop from 6 per cent 50 years ago.

In 1957 food and non-alcoholic drinks were the single biggest expense for households, taking up 33 per cent of the budget. In 2007 that had dropped to 15 per cent - but housing costs, including mortgage payments, had grown from 9 per cent to 19 per cent, making them the single biggest outgoing for today's families.
