Symington parts with de Roriz

08 February, 2007

The Symington Family has ended its seven-year partnership with the owner of Quinta de Roriz, Joćo van Zeller.

The decision was made by mutual agreement after both parties decided that the Douro-based

quinta was in "an excellent position to stand alone".

The changes follow the completion of new high-tech wine making facilities in one of historic buildings of the estate.

The new team at Quinta de Roriz will be lead by Cristiano van Zeller and Sandra Tavares da Silva, who will be taking over gradually from the existing Symington Family's team, and will be in full control from July.

Euan Mackay has been appointed sales director of Symington Family Estates. Mackay, who will be based in Portugal, will report to commercial director Johnny Symington. In 1996 Mackay joined Symington Family Estates with responsibility for several key European and Asian markets, but remained based in the UK. In 2006 he moved to Oporto with his family.

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
