Grant and Sharp end partnership

08 February, 2008

The boss of boutique Scottish beer producer Innis & Gunn has bought out his joint venture partner in the business, the Scotch whisky producer William Grant.

Dougal Sharp and Grant formed the company in 2003, with the distiller as the majority shareholder. Grant will continue to provide "oak maturation services" for the Innis & Gunn range.

Sharp continues as managing director with his father Russell, founder of the Caledonian Brewery, as a director.

Sharp said: "William Grant could not have been more supportive from day one, and we have bought the business at a time of impressive growth both at home and overseas."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
