Organised by the Association of Portuguese Wine Importers in conjunction with the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Office and ViniPortugal, the awards were created to acknowledge those doing most for the Portuguese wine industry in the UK.

Adnams, which recently reported a 40 per cent sales increase after listing 10 new wines as part of a 25,000 bursary scheme from ViniPortugal and Wines of Portugal, was voted runner-up in the Independent Merchant category.

The Wine Society's promotion of Portuguese wines was applauded, with the co-operative beating runner-up Waitrose to The National Retailer Award. Wine writer Jamie Goode was presented with the Journalism Award and Nandos

took the Restaurant Award.

APWI chair Nick Oakley, from Oakley Wine Agencies, said: "The UK is a market that's very tough. All wine is sold on a varietal basis and Portugal doesn't have those varieties. There are lighthouse brands which are speaking out for Portugal. It used to be frustrating, now it's going forward."

Before the ceremony, the trade had

a tasting of 50 Great Portuguese Wines, selected by journalist Simon Woods.
