Red, white and rosé

Piper-Heidsieck

Brut Rosé Sauvage

None of your subtle salmon hues here - this is a deep pink fizz with plenty of cherry and strawberry notes on the nose and palate. Pleasingly dry on the palate with a clean finish.

Robust enough to convert even the most hardened of rosé sceptics.RE

Villa Maria NZ Pinot Noir

Marlborough 2006

A classic light-bodied Kiwi tipple. Cherry and herbal notes dominate the nose

and there is plenty of fruit on the palate. Supple tannins. This was drunk lightly chilled - an excellent accompaniment to a roast chicken dinner. RE

Macon Villages 2005

Les Ormeaux

Crisp apple is followed by a hint of vanilla on the nose of this pale lemon coloured wine. On the palate there are hints of apple and pear with some buttery notes, but the finish is disappointingly short. EE

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
