Asian beers taken to the Max

07 March, 2008

Pierhead Purchasing has boosted its Asian beer range with Max Prime, one of Korea's best-selling premium beers.

The 4.5 per cent abv lager is brewed in the Hite Brewery, which Pierhead says is Korea's biggest and longest-standing brewery, in the South Korean capital of Seoul.

Max Prime is brewed with US Cascade hops using a non-thermal fermentation process and water from the brewery's own well. It is straw-coloured and full-bodied, with a distinctive malty taste and hints of citrus and zesty fruit on the nose, according to Pierhead.

The importer said the beer was a perfect match for Korean food.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
