Second SITT style event planned for summer

19 March, 2008

The organisers of the Specialist Importers Trade Tastings are to run a second event aimed at independents this summer.

The Boutique Wineries Tasting will be held at Vinopolis on June 10 and will give independent wine merchants the chance to meet importers who supply wines from small family-owned estates.

Exhibitors will be a mixture of small specialists such as California’s Tree Top Cellars, larger specialists with smaller wineries like Oakley Wine Agencies and agencies with “well rounded” portfolios such as Hatch Mansfield and HwCg who are looking for distribution in the independent sector.

Like SITT, the number of exhibitors will be strictly controlled and each one will be restricted to 15 wines per table.

Organiser Judy Kendrick said: “I know the size of SITT works and people really like it, and there are lots of really good companies that are selling wines to independent merchants and to good on-trade that don’t have an opportunity to have an event of their own. I want to give them that opportunity and to give independent wine merchants a second bite of the cherry.”

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
