Mahon takes on Wine Cellar helm

The n ew managing director for Wine Cellar,

Steve Mahon, is preparing to meet staff and suppliers at the company's first conference for several years.

Mahon recently joined the Runcorn-based chain after stepping down as chief executive of online retail business Ebuyer. He replaces Carole Ormerod, who took over as interim boss following the departure of former managing director Paul Gaskell.

The conference will be used to outline the future strategy for the Booze Buster and Simply Drinks operator, which is thought to be considering a further shift towards grocery convenience.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
