What the OLN imbibers have been sampling recently

La Chasse du Pape Réserve 2006

Redcurrants merge with hints of vanilla on the nose of this medium-weight wine made from a blend of four different red grapes. There is more red fruit on the palate and some sweet spice, which gives it a lovely long finish.


Laithwaites Monte Leon Carmenère 2006

Notes of green pepper hit you on the nose of this Carmenère from Chile's Colchagua region.

The palate abounds with soft red fruit and hints of spice. A good match to bangers and mash or a chilli con carne. EE

De Bortoli All Rounder Semillon 2002

This unusual wine is affected by noble rot and then fermented to almost dry, rather than made as a sweet wine. The nose is what you would expect of a botrytised wine, with hints of apricot, pineapple and orange marmalade, but the palate is an interesting mix of herbs, spice, vanilla and a limey zestiness.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
