The race is on - JS decides final riders

John Smith's has chosen the 10 riders to compete in its People's Race at Aintree at tomorrow's

Grand National.

The

riders for the charity race were picked from thousands of applicants to receive professional training.

Organisers of the nine furlong race, sponsored by John Smith's, hope to raise 500,000 for charity including this year's official race charity, Sport Relief.

Each

jockey

will collect 5,000 for a charity of their choice, with John Smith's donating a further 50,000 to the winner's charity. The winner will also be awarded a five-star trip for two to Dubai to see the 2009 racing World Cup.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
