The race is on - JS decides final riders

John Smith's has chosen the 10 riders to compete in its People's Race at Aintree at tomorrow's

Grand National.

The

riders for the charity race were picked from thousands of applicants to receive professional training.

Organisers of the nine furlong race, sponsored by John Smith's, hope to raise £500,000 for charity including this year's official race charity, Sport Relief.

Each

jockey

will collect £5,000 for a charity of their choice, with John Smith's donating a further £50,000 to the winner's charity. The winner will also be awarded a five-star trip for two to Dubai to see the 2009 racing World Cup.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
