Independents offered training

04 April, 2008

Skillsmart Retail has teamed up with the Retail Trust to offer 10 management training bursaries for independent retailers.

The scholarships cover the

£1,500 cost of the Oxford Summer School, a retail training course run by the British Shops & Stores Association at Keble College, Oxford from Aug 16-22.

The course will feature a mix of speakers, presentations and group discussions, focusing on enhancing each delegate's skills in the management of people, money, merchandise and retail space. It also aims to sharpen their practical skills in the workplace.

Anne Seaman, chief executive of Skillsmart Retail, said: "If retailers don't get fast-tracked onto the latest global thinking, they may begin to fall behind the competition.

"For managers of smaller and independent retail companies, the Oxford Summer School is the perfect opportunity to network with other retail managers and industry leaders in a relaxed yet stimulating residential environment."

The bursaries are open to all retail managers, but companies

with fewer than 250 employees are especially welcome to apply.

An application form can be downloaded from the events section of skillsmartretail.com. The closing date for applications is April 25.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
