Cabanne leaves £4.3m estate

Thierry Cabanne, who died in a car accident last year, left an estate of almost £4.3 million. The founder and chairman of Thierry's Wines Services will be honoured with an award named after him in the International Wine Challenge - the last event he attended before his death, aged 62. His other business interests were connected with Horsefair, a company set up in 1990 marketing equine care products.

UK embraces Austrian wine

Austrian wine exports grew

30% to E105 million in 2007, with the UK showing "enormous growth", the Austrian Wine Marketing Board has said. Austrian wine sales in the UK off-trade reached £481,000 in the year to Nov

2007, according to Nielsen. The country has one of the highest average bottle prices in the market at £7.14.

Chilean president celebrates

Chilean president Michelle Bachelet was guest of honour at a reception at Vintners' Hall in London on Thursday to celebrate the UK's position as Chile's number one export market for wine.

German showcase

Fortnum & Mason is showcasing eight German wines supplied by the Wine Barn, four of which are made from Spätburgunder - better known to some as Pinot Noir. The selection also includes Solter sparkling Brut Reserve Riesling .

New Italian duo

Playford Ros Prestige Agencies has launched Tiberio, a pair of wines from Marche in Italy. The DOC wines are made by the Tiberio family, advised by winemaker Riccardo Cotarella.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2006 and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2005 are to retail at £6.95 plus VAT.

UK office for La Riojana

Argentinian organic and Fairtrade wine producer La Riojana co-operative has set up a commercial office in the UK. Export director Walter Carol will head up the

operation, while Patricio Angonoa, currently export manager for Asia and Canada,

will move to the UK

to take up the position of commercial manager. Tierra PR has been appointed to handle public relations and marketing in the UK.

CIVC awards 'effervescence'

This year's CIVC Champagne Ambassador's Awards will focus on the "effervescent nature of Champagne". The competition, now in its fourth year, recognises and rewards the work of wine lecturers, tutors and teachers. One winner from the UK final in September will compete with European finalists to win the title European Champagne Ambassador.

Weinbörse announced

The VDP's annual spring trade fair, the Weinbörse, will take place in the Rheingoldhalle of Mainz on April 29-30. More than 150 Prädikat Wine Estate producers will present around 1,000 wines from all German wine-growing regions. Visit

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”.
