Turkey makes LIWF debut

17 April, 2008

Ten Turkish wineries will be showing how Turkey has become a modern wine producer when it makes its first appearance at the London International Wine Fair next month.

Wines of Turkey, a new generic body that represents 10 Turkish wineries, will be exhibiting at the show under the campaign banner Discover the Roots.

Many sources claim Turkey as the birthplace of wine, but it is only over the past 10 years that producers have invested in technology and modern winemaking to enable it to compete internationally.

Taner Ogutoglu, spokesperson for Wines of Turkey, said: “Wine production in Turkey has seen phenomenal development over the last 10 years with major improvements in winemaking techniques and, subsequently quality. We will be showcasing the latest styles from our top producers at this year’s LIWF before beginning a push in the on-trade and independent sectors later in the year.”

Turkey produces international varieties such as Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay alongside indigenous varieties including Kalecik Karasi, Bogazkere, Bornova Misketi and Narince.

Wineries presenting at LIWF at London’s Excel from May 20-22 are Büyülübag Wines, Calvi Kalecik Wines, Corvus Wines, Doluca Wines, Gülor Wines, Kavaklidere Wines, Kayra Wines, Kocabag Wines, Pamukkale Wines and Sevilen Wines.

The campaign name There’s A Beer For That may have got cynics like me trying to think of things there wasn’t a beer for, but broadly speaking it was a force for good.
