Berkmann snaps up Vinoceros

02 May, 2008

Berkmann Wine Cellars has bought Vinoceros and its subsidiary Laymont & Shaw for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will strengthen Berkmann's position in the off-trade and combine two complementary portfolios and distribution networks, the companies claim.

Berkmann managing director Dinesh Changela said: "This acquisition will help us to expand our business significantly and to drive it forward. Importantly, as with our previous acquisitions, the businesses of Vinoceros and Laymont & Shaw will maintain their individuality."

Nick Richards, managing director of Vinoceros, added: "This deal represents a fantastic opportunity for us, especially with the financial backing of a larger organisation."

London-based Berkmann, which operates through six branches, is the UK agent for Yalumba, Georges Duboeuf and Bodega Norton. Vinoceros, based in Redruth, Cornwall, is UK agent for McGuigan wines while Laymont & Shaw specialises in Spanish wines.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
