Cains eyes lager rivals with Morrisons listing

14 May, 2008

Liverpool brewer Cains is looking to rival foreign lagers like Stella and Kronenbourg after agreeing a deal with Morrisons to secure its first national supermarket listing.

Cains Finest Lager, brewed from premium Maris Otter malt from Norfolk, will enter 342 Morrisons stores across the UK later this month.

Chief executive Sudarghara Dusanj said Cains had taken the next step to becoming a truly national beer brand.

“This new listing with Morrisons allows our premium British lager to challenge foreign lager brands like Stella, Heineken, Carlsberg and Kronenbourg.”

Cains recently launched a limited edition bottled version of its Finest Lager, designed by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, creator of the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
