PLB for Vinos de Familia

PLB has been named UK agent for Vinos de Familia, the wine arm of J García Carrión, which it says is Spain's biggest wine and fruit juice producer. PLB will be distributing brands such as Mayor de Castilla, Pata Negra, Don Simon and Antaño, and wines from 10 DOs including Rueda, Rioja and La Mancha.

Shape of things to come

A report from Berry Bros & Rudd forecasts that countries such as China, Poland and Canada will be moving up the world wine rankings over the next 50 years as global warming shapes the industry. The Future of Wine report also foresees a day when France could lose its position as the world's leading fine wine producer, with India most likely to take up the mantle.

Gallo appointments

Gallo has appointed Kevin McMillen its head of UK and Ireland sales, joining Gallo Europe from the US business. Nick Elkin, who joined the company 12 years ago as a sales representative, has been promoted to sales director for UK grocery. David Mallory has been promoted to impulse controller for UK retail sales. He joined Gallo 1999 as a sales rep . Helen Moore has been appointed Sainsbury's national account manager. Edward Ward becomes controller for brand marketing Europe, and Ian Belcher trade marketing controller for Europe.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
