Record visitor numbers for LIWF

28 May, 2008

Nearly 16,000 visitors turned up for last week’s London International Wine Fair and Distil, setting a new record attendance, organisers say.

Visitor numbers rose 17 per cent on last year, organiser firm Brintex announced on Wednesday. It called Distil, the separate spirits fair debuting this year, a “resounding success”.

Most significant may be a 22 per cent increase in international visitors, helping to cement London as a leading hub for international drinks expos.

It emerged before the show that all major New World wine countries had begun explorative talks on pulling out of Vinexpo, the flagship international wine fair held bi-annually in Bordeaux.

Wines of Chile’s Michael Cox told OLN that talks were only “embryonic”, but that it was “no secret” that different shows worked for different countries. London’s Wine Fair was one example of an alternative, he said.

Bojana Kosanovic, marketing manager for Oddbins and Nicolas UK added, "The LIWF is one of the most important events of the year for us as many of our suppliers and clients can all be found under one roof.
