Nepal Ice is latest bottled beer import

30 May, 2008

Nepal is to become the latest country represented in the imported bottled lager category in the UK.

Altitude Imports (UK) has been set up by Folkestone-based restaurateur Kishore Sapkota to import Nepal Ice from the country's Sungold Brewery.

Sapkota said Nepalese restaurants would form the core of its early sales push, but the independent off-trade would be targeted too.

"There are around 20-30 Nepalese retailers selling groceries from the country, and we'll also be aiming to get into

corner shops and little off-licences," he said.

The beer is a 5.5% abv lager, supplied in 65cl sharing bottles.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
