German Grigio outstrips Riesling

13 June, 2008

Sales of Pinot Grigio from Germany have overtaken its Riesling sales in the UK off-trade, soaring 10% according to Nielsen.

"This is the first time this has happened," said Steffen Schindler, marketing director of the German Wine Institute. "Even we were surprised ."

He now hopes to grow Pinot Grigio sales more in the off-trade, and boost Riesling in the on-trade, particularly marketing it as a food match.

Wines of Germany is running its biggest summer sampling campaign so far at concerts around the UK.
