Tesco's tartan foray

Tesco is rolling out its Wine Club Fairs programme in Scotland for the first time in the autumn.

The Edinburgh Corn Exchange will host a fair on Sept 20 and 21, adding to a programme line-up that already includes events in Manchester, London and Bristol.

The Manchester event is moving from the Palace Hotel to Manchester Central - formerly the G-Mex centre - to meet increased demand for tickets, and is on Sept 6 and 7.

Over 40 suppliers and six generic bodies will exhibit some 350 wines, and there will also be a series of wine workshops in conjunction with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and visiting winemakers.

The Tesco wine team will host a series of themed wine walks.

Wine category manager Andrew Carpenter said: "With the addition of Edinburgh and the expansion of Manchester, we can now offer the fair experience to a wider audience. We are

also bringing in new features, to continue to excite and challenge our customers."

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the supermarket group's Wine Club Fairs programme. Last year's fairs attracted 5,550 visitors.

The London fair is at the Royal Horticultural Halls on Sept 27 and 28, and the Bristol event at the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum on Oct 11 and 12.

Day tickets cost £10, with Saturday morning sessions available for £6 in Manchester and London.

Chamarré has set up educational installations in London's wine museum Vinopolis, teaching visitors the essentials of wine tasting, the basics on French wine and about different grape varieties. The team-up with Vinopolis also means museum visitors can taste a glass of Chamarré's Réserve Spéciale Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Chamarré chief executive Pascal Renaudat said: "It makes sense for us to celebrate French wine while helping to make basic wine knowledge and wine tasting more accessible and easier to understand."

French wine body Sopexa has announced the winners of OLN's South West France competition (May 2 issue). The answer to the question "What is the main grape variety used in Madiran AOC?" was Tannat. Michael Walkden of Brighton, Ifor Stanton of Bath, John Owain of Winslow and Liz Sagues of Chichester will each receive two cases of wine from the region (shown above).

The Australian Wine & Brandy Corporation has announced five new members of its board. Marketing consultant Josephine Rozman joins

with Kate Thompson of Pernod Ricard Pacific and Natalie Toohey of Foster's Group. Kevin McLintock of McWilliam's and Tony Jordan, chief executive of three Australian and New Zealand wineries, complete the line-up, joining existing members Andrew Moore, of sales, marketing and distribution business Build Your Own Brands, and Mark Purbrick of Management Solutions Australia.

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust has appointed Antony Moss as its research and development director. Chief executive Ian Harris said: "This promotion reflects the strategic emphasis on developing new programmes for WSET, and gives the research and development function an independent, company-wide role, detached from the WSET's London Wine & Spirit School and WSET Awards.

Newly-formed wine education consortium the European Academy of Wine Education has held its first conference in Rust, Austria. The body brings together wine educators from all over Europe, who discussed international wine education issues and networked at the two-day conference.

Ripe dark berries and plums from 20% Merlot in the blend, with a hint of smoky wood from two years' barrique ageing. Fresh, zesty palate with a rounded feel, great acidity, black fruit and spice, and menthol on the finish.


Huber Riesling Berg 2007 Importer: Thierry's

Delicate nose of peaches and cream and a bone-dry palate with concentrated fruit: lemon, honey, peaches and apricot. Refreshing minerality and a lingering citrus finish. CB

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable.
