Montana meets eco deadline early

13 June, 2008

New Zealand producer Montana has attained the ISO 14001 environmental standard for all its production sites three months ahead of schedule.

The certification covers environmental commitments such as recycling, using fewer resources and the promotion of biodiversity in vineyards.

This follows a pledge by Montana earlier this year to increase non-vineyard planting, reduce its outgoing to landfill and increase use of natural fertilisers.

Winery manager Ken Rogers said: "We work to ensure that all aspects and impacts of our winery and storage systems minimise environmental impact.

"We have specific targets to reduce waste, reduce water and energy usage, protect against environmental spills and keep tight control of chemicals on site."

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
