Bargain Booze store's high-tech crackdown on kids

A Bargain Booze franchisee is using cutting-edge technology to help crack down on under-age sales.

Martin Ashton, who operates two stores in Ormesby, Teesside, is using a fingerprint recognition system to help identify customers who have already shown staff acceptable proof of age.

The OKID system electronically records the fingerprint code. " Only then

will they be allowed to purchase alcohol and cigarettes," said Ashton. "Each subsequent time the person wishes to buy alcohol or cigarettes, they need only have their fingerprint read

to prove their age.

"With such a biometric age verification system, I can help support the UK front-line battle to reduce under-age drinking. I think we also demonstrate to the community that we are a responsible retailer. We do sell cheap alcohol, but we want to make sure it goes to the right people."

Ashton added: "Bargain Booze,

North Ormesby, will be the first store in the north east to use this system."

Bargain Booze joint managing director Matthew Hughes said

OKID

was being rolled out "with individual franchisees who feel

it is suitable

to add to their initiatives on responsible retailing" .

"The machines take a 2D binary fingerprint image - it's not the kind of fingerprinting that could be used in a police investigation or a criminal prosecution, but certainly sufficient for the required end result," he added.
