Sir Bobby Robson blows up brewery

23 June, 2008

Football legend Sir Bobby Robson has exploded the old Newcastle Brown Ale bottling plant, marking the start of the site’s demolition.

Robson, who famously guided England to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990 and later managed Newcastle United, pressed the plunger to the demolish the historic building on Monday morning.

Newcastle Brown Ale was bottled at the plant until 2005, when former owners Scottish & Newcastle decided operations there were no longer “commercially viable”.

The site will be converted into a science park, also set to include accommodation and bars.

Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
