Cider tops movers list

Bulmers Original is the fastest-growing drinks brand in the British off-trade, OLN can reveal. The Scottish & Newcastle cider saw sales rocket by 320% in the past year, according to Nielsen data published today in our Growth Brands report.

There was also good news for stablemate Strongbow, 19th

in the chart with an 18% sales uplift, and rival Magners, up 56%.

Fifteen brands in the list are wines, led by Concha y Toro, which experienced an 81% sales increase. The struggling beer sector had only four representatives, led by Peroni, up 51%.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
