Thresher's McEvoy joins Spar

Former Thresher and Sainsbury's wine buyer Helen McEvoy has joined Spar, replacing Giles Walker, who has moved to Morrisons. McEvoy joined Sainsbury's in 2004 and became buyer for Germany in 2005, before moving to Thresher a year later as a senior buyer. Her replacement

at Thresher is Ed Evans, who rejoins

after a stint at Tesco. She said:

"There's a massive opportunity with wine at Spar - there are more than 2,500 stores and real potential for making a difference."

Summer in the Comfort zone

Southern Comfort has embarked on a new TV ad campaign as part of this summer's 1.2 million investment in the brand. The Suspended Moments campaign, to be aired on ITV and Sky Sports, portrays a group of friends enjoying the brand with lime and lemonade. Consumers will receive a free pitcher with purchases of Southern Comfort in a simultaneous off-trade promotion.

Derbyshire: 47% fail in sting

A test purchase operation in Derbyshire has resulted in 47% of targeted shops selling alcohol to under-age volunteers. The on-trade fared better, with a 25% failure rate. Police said they were disappointed by the figures and said they would work with retailers to ensure plans were put in place to prevent under-age

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
