Over the next four pages, Graham Holter reveals the brands sprinting ahead of the pack in the drinks aisles

Fastest growing" is a phrase beloved of suppliers whose products sell one unit in the first year and three the next. Happily, our chart concentrates purely on brands which are already shifting respectable volumes in the UK off-trade, rather than here today, gone tomorrow launches.

Nielsen calculated the data by examining the performances of the 100 best-selling take-home drinks brands and comparing their sales value in the year to February 2008 with the same period the previous year. Our list contains 15 wines, four beers and four spirits. There are also three ciders, two of which are in the top five.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
