Mateus turns to Portugal

27 June, 2008

Mateus has launched what it claims is the first ever sparkling rosť wine from Portugal to enter the UK market.

The non-vintage Sparkling Brut Rosť has been added to the Mateus range by distributor First Drinks Brands.

The wine is made mainly from the Baga grape, the most widely-planted variety in Portugal's Bairrada region.

Senior brand manager Anthony Habert said: "This is a great opportunity for the trade to capitalise on buoyant sales in rosť and sparkling wines with a brand that has the credentials and reputation to inspire and excite people to buy and enjoy it.

"Mateus has a strong identity and is recognised for being a leader in innovation in the rosť market."

Agreeing to disagree

Disagreeing about wine is a fact of wine-trade life, like drugs in sport or corruption in politics. Because taste is entirely subjective, debates about our personal preferences are as inevitable as they are interminable. Indeed, these long-winded, wine-fuelled arguments are precisely what make our jobs so much fun.
