Prosecco leads rise in Waitrose sales

27 June, 2008

Waitrose says it is selling more sparkling wine than ever before, with prosecco showing the most dramatic uplift in sales.

Total sparkling wine sales are ahead by 13% year on year, with the Italian fizz up by 56%.

Champagne sales are up 10% and English sparkling wine is making its presence felt in the supermarket's sales figures, too.

Wine buyer Dee Blackstock MW said: "Despite the credit crunch, British consumers still want to retain some sparkle in their lives and they are clearly entertaining at home or taking picnics with friends and family.

"The success story of the summer has been prosecco, often overlooked in the past. Maybe this has something to do with its attractive price tag, as well as the fact that Britons have grown to love it during holidays spent in Italy."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
