Sainsbury’s to close wine website

07 July, 2008

Sainsbury’s is to shut down its wine website following a review of its online sales strategy.

Sainsury’s will close the site, www.sainsburyswine.co.uk, from the end of July, in preparation for the launch of a non-food sales website early next year.

Extra resources will also be given to the main online grocery site, which will continue to include wine and Champagne.

A company spokesperson told OLN the group was unable to break out online wine sales, but added: “It’s a very small proportion of sales. Most people will shop in-store for their wines.”

Sainsburywine.co.uk was launched in 2001 as a site for specialist wines.

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle – which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
