Whyte & Mackay tipped for Glen Moray bid

Reports suggest that Whyte & Mackay is planning a bid for Glen Moray, the LVMH-owned malt whisky brand.

The company, which has not commented on the speculation, is thought to be ready to take advantage of LVMH’s strategic review of its Scotch whisky business.

Glen Moray, produced at Elgin in Speyside, is not among the leading malt brands in the UK but in OLN’s 2007 Spirits Report recorded a 16 per cent sales increase to claim 43rd position in the chart.

One drinks analyst suggested the brand would be a good acquisition for Whyte & Mackay, which is now owned by United Spirits and has ambitions for the Indian market. The brand is considered by some to be too small to be of interest to major spirits players such as Diageo and Pernod Ricard.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
