It's Wachau day for Alliance

11 July, 2008

Austrian wine producer Domäne Wachau has appointed Alliance Wine as its sole UK importer.

Alliance said the agreement was a move by the Austrian firm to build on changes made to presentation and quality

of its wines by the new

Wachau management team of Roman Horvath and Heinz Frischengruber.

The 300-year-old co-operative has invested in vineyard quality and has graded growers to try to drive up standards.

Horvath said: "At at time when we have a lot of potential to build upon, we are delighted to have found a company whose energy, passion and dynamism match our own."

Giles Cooke MW, wine development director for Alliance, added: "We have been really impressed by the wine quality

and professionalism that accompanies it.

"The wines are fabulous and express a sense of place like no other wines can. We are going to have real fun selling them."

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
