Ex-Majestic chief takes on WSTA role

25 July, 2008

Retiring Majestic Wine chief executive Tim How has been named as the Wine & Spirit Trade Association's next chairman.

He will replace Christopher Carson, who has held the position since April.

How said: "It is an honour to be asked to be chairman of the WSTA and I hope my many years of experience in the business will benefit colleagues as we work to promote the industry.

"I'd like to pay tribute to Christopher for leading the WSTA over the past few years and broadening industry support for the trade body during a period of growing public and government interest in the drinks industry."

Carson said: "I have worked with Tim for many years and wish him well in his new role.

"Now more than ever the industry needs a strong voice and I know that Tim, with his significant wealth of knowledge of the industry, will continue to provide solid leadership to the WSTA."

Richard Hemming MW: beware inverse snobbery

Few things can bring communal pleasure so intimately as wine. Apart from a hot tub, perhaps. Sport can trigger mass jubilation, film gives us shared empathy, but wine has a nigh-unique ability to bestow conviviality among us through a shared bottle ľ which makes it especially galling that we spend so much time divided over it.
