On the ball self-service wine-tasting

QI like the idea of allowing customers to try wine before they buy and have read that some retailers now use machines, which let people help themselves to selected bottles. How do I get hold of these machines?

A This is probably Enomatic, featured in London wine shop The Sampler, Selfridges and on the International Wine Challenge stand at the London Wine Fair. These self-service devices are made to a number of different designs in Italy. The manufacturer claims the devices keep the wine in top condition and also have self-cleaning spouts.

The idea for wine merchants is that you can charge people to sample the various wines available for tasting, perhaps offering a small discount if they buy a bottle of what they have tried.

Talking terroir

When Bordeaux was in fashion, it seemed almost logical that we should fetishise winemakers. Here were people responsible for brilliant acts of blending, across large estates and multiple grape varieties, including superstars such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot. These days, fashion has moved on and pinot noir is ascendant. As a result, the star of the winemaker has fallen and we find ourselves following a new star in the sky: terroir.
