Drinks sales fall flat over spring

The off-trade drinks market has flattened out this spring, according to Nielsen.

Light wine volume sales fell 5% in the four weeks to April 19, 4% in the four weeks to May 17 and 2% in the four weeks to June 14.

Meanwhile the spirits market looked like it was "flattening out", said analyst Stewart Blunt. Champagne sales are slowing, but beer and cider are "holding up reasonably well" - although beer sales dipped in April after a peak in March.

Lifting the spirits

I were to sum up alcohol sales over Christmas 2017 in one word, it would be “gin”. At Nielsen, we define the Christmas period as the 12 weeks to December 30 and in that time gin sales were £199.4 million, which means they increased by £55.4 million compared with Christmas 2016.
